Certificates in Book and Magazine Publishing

Boston University is proud to offer certificate programs in Book and Magazine Publishing, designed to educate students on the latest trends, practices, and technologies in publishing.

Both programs are designed for:

  • Those who wish to enter the publishing industry
  • Publishing professionals who who want to take on more significant roles
  • Professionals in the corporate or non-profit sector publishing magazines, books, or other intellectual property to enhance branding and organizational credibility
  • Self-publishers of freelancers in publishing-related fields
  • Career changers seeking to upgrade their credentials
  • People who have a strong background in editorial and writing aspects of publishing, but want to gain a full understanding of the business, advertising sales, marketing, and promotion aspects

Classes are held in the evening, three hours a week over a seven-week term. The certificate program curriculum consists of eight courses total: four core courses and four specialization courses. Students choose either the book or magazine track.

Discount Note
Students who enroll in the entire program (eight courses) at the initial time of registration are eligible for a 20% discount. Students may also register for individual courses.

Certificate in Book Publishing
Coursework covers all aspects of the book industry, including custom publishing, academic and textbook publishing, book marketing and promotion, acquisitions and editorial direction, plus author contact and negotiations. Students receive hands-on instruction from seasoned professionals who ensure that the curriculum reflects the rapid changes that occur in media and publishing.

Certificate in Magazine Publishing
Students in magazine publishing learn editing, magazine design and production, advertising sales and marketing, circulation, and the business of launching and operating magazine properties from concept to magazine stand.

For those just entering the industry, the courses provide a broad core of practical knowledge necessary for assuming a professional role in publishing. For those already in entry-level positions in publishing, coursework provides advanced training to facilitate broader professional responsibilities and re-training in new skills.

BU Certificates in Publishing
Students who have successfully completed the program requirements are eligible to receive the Boston University Certificate in Book Publishing or the Boston University Certificate in Magazine Publishing. Successful completion of the program requires a minimum grade of C (2.0) in each course and an overall grade point average of B- (2.7).
